What Is UGC-NET?
The University Grants Commission – National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) is a national-level exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the UGC. It assesses eligibility for:

  • Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)
  • Assistant Professor positions
  • PhD admissions in Indian universities and colleges
It is widely regarded as one of India’s most competitive exams.
Frequency, Mode & Eligibility
  • Offered: Twice a year (June and December)
  • Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT)
  • Who can appear: Master’s degree holders or final-year students in eligible subjects
Exam Pattern & Time Duration
  • Total Duration: 3 hours (180 minutes) for both papers combined
  • No break between Paper I and Paper II

  • SC / ST / PwD / Third Gender: ₹325

While UGC-NET is primarily for eligibility, many prestigious institutions value it—especially for recruitment and PhD fellowship.

Abroad Colleges and UGC-NET
There are no international colleges or universities abroad that officially accept UGC-NET scores for admission or recruitment. The exam is specific to India’s higher education system. If you're planning to study or work abroad, you'll typically need to meet separate eligibility criteria relevant to that country or institution.
